Individualization of phosphate binders dosage by patient training
Dear colleagues,
Instead of using a fixed dosage schedule, in this study 16 children with
chronic kidney failure and their parents were trained to eye-estimate the
phosphate content of a meal and to adjust the phosphate binder dosage
accordingly. Within six weeks after the training the percentage of
children with hyperphosphataemia decreased markedly and the change from a
fixed dose to an individual one led to an increased daily phosphate binder
intake without serious adverse events. Regarding the tremendous influence
of hyperphosphataemia on bone disease and cardiovascular mortality, every
means that shows a positive influence on serum phosphate levels should be
taken into consideration.
