It is essential for the detection of CKD to have reliable estimates of GFR. The use of the MDRD formula does not allow reliable reporting of GFR >60ml/min/1.73m² due to inaccuracy.
In this publication, the new CKD-EPI formula for the estimation of GFR was compared to the MDRD formula according to clinical characteristics and GFR levels.
The CKD-EPI formula showed better estimates overall and among most subgroups.
Therefore, the use of this new formula might improve the diagnosis and management of CKD and makes reporting of higher GFR levels more reliable.
